Creativity is for every industry

This is what Snappy Kraken ultimately proved by bursting on the scene in 2016 as a startup with a huge idea and the most unorthodox branding in the space.

When I was asked to come on as the 5th member and co-founder, Snappy Kraken’s logo was the only thing established aesthetically. The owners wanted me to lead and build the creative and establish and develop the brand’s presence. Snappy Kraken was to be an automated marketing company for financial advisors that utilized design in a way that was different from the crowd of safe, yawn-inducing creative. 

First, we defined what it meant to be “snappy” by showing the financial world that it is ok to be different and bold while also being relatable, organized and developed. The best of both worlds. 

The Brand

Defining what it means to be corporate and whimsical

Corporate whimsy. A sliding scale of how to approach the brand’s creative so that based on the audience you can lean into a more corporate (i.e. structured) style or more whimsical (i.e. creative) style. This approach was key because our segmented audiences (Enterprise vs. Retail) had different aesthetic needs but we still needed to keep the brand’s vibe intact.

When brainstorming how to visualize the problems that would make a financial advisor interested in working with an automated marketing company, my team and I conceptualized and developed the marketing trolls, Void N. Confused (someone who doesn’t know what to do with their marketing so they do nothing at all), Bernie Cash (someone who spends more and more money on things thinking that if they’re spending a lot, they’re doing a lot) and Dee I. Why (someone who tackles trying to do everything themselves and subsequently becomes overwhelmed).

These portrayals helped our target audience to relate and identify with feeling these frustrations in their business development and why they should turn to Snappy Kraken.

Huge credit to the amazing Creative Director, Lindsay Warden, also an extremely talented illustrator, whom I collaborated with closely on the look and story for the trolls. In collaboration with the CMO we wrote the story and script and partnered with an outside agency to produce the video. We guided them closely to ensure all elements and aspects stayed on brand.

Our Chief Content Officer developed a retail content strategy revolving around digital campaigns that were a part of a larger marketing strategy. What we knew is that “just” content wouldn’t work. Advisors needed a coordinated message with creative built to influence an audience’s emotions, that sets out to accomplish specific goal. Though we were building a scalable solution I was tasked with how to keep a custom feeling aesthetic while allowing each advisor to add their own personalization.

As SK expanded over the years lots of branded initiatives were ideated to continue building brand equity and awareness. In order to keep the vibe of Snappy Kraken synonymous with forward thinking design that was unafraid to boldly go places while still maintaining its relatability, I made sure the team carefully considered how to use the style guide and corporate vs whimsy mantra to build individual identities for each element that didn’t feel like a regurgitation of the parent brand.

Working inside an industry not known for pushing creative meant that trust and my ability to translate way out-of-the-box ideas with tangible clarity was important, not only at the top with my peers, but also down to the small team I was working with. The player/coach mentality was a no-brainer and positioning the brand to bring in high level designers and not just “get er done” types was a significant part of the puzzle.

The name Snappy Kraken became synonymous with creativity, innovation, and standing out. It was THE place to come, for financial advisors, if you wanted to build a more authentic marketing relationship with your clients but didn’t have the marketing know how, time to commit or access to quality and our growth skyrocketed.
